Shifting the Childcare Industry
Shifting the Childcare Industry: Better Jobs for Better Access
Support community colleges and industry leaders to adopt practices within educational and training systems that ensure all students have access to the right information, supports, training, and connections that result in good jobs.
The Challenge
Childcare is out of reach for many working families — not because demand is low, but because the sector itself is in crisis.
Chronic underinvestment has led to low wages, staffing shortages, and regulatory challenges that strain providers and limit both access and supply — making it difficult for families to find affordable, reliable care.
As a result, educators and providers — predominantly women and people of color — remain in low-paying roles with limited supports, while communities struggle to build the childcare infrastructure they need to thrive.
What We’re Doing
This initiative aims to change that trajectory. By working alongside our Network Partners, childcare educators, providers, and policymakers, Shift Work Forward is helping communities improve job quality, support self-employed providers, and advance policy solutions that strengthen the childcare workforce.
The goal is a more resilient, equitable childcare system — one that values educators, expands access for families, and recognizes childcare as essential workforce infrastructure.
